Josh Sommer didn’t want to accept his diagnosis. When he began experiencing headaches as a freshman at Duke University, he went in for an MRI. Doctors found a large tumor in Sommer’s head. They told him he had chordoma, a rare, malignant bone cancer. He was told the average lifespan for those with the disease is seven years. Worse, there is little that can be done aside from a tricky surgery and radiation, and, even if they successfully remove the tumor, chordoma has a high recurrence rate.
